Strings in the Summer Public Concert at Carson Mall

Carson City Symphony's Strings in the Summer, directed by Symphony Education Director Sue Jesch and Associate Concertmaster Laura Gibson, perform in a free public concert on Thursday, July 27, 2017, 10:30 a.m., at Carson Mall. The Strings in the Summer sessions run from June 14 to July 26 this year (see May 30, 2017, Media Release).

The sessions consist of two parts: Introduction to Fiddle and Folk Music is primarily for younger students, and for violinists, violists and cellists of any age who have limited experience. String Ensemble is for advanced beginner to intermediate violin, viola, cello, and bass players of all ages who want to play fun tunes arranged for string orchestra.

Youth Strings Performs for World Dance Open Floor
Friday, Aug. 18, 2017

Carson City Symphony's STRAZZ ensemble features some of the area's top strings students. They play toe-tapping jazz and fiddle tunes. Introduced to jazz at a Jazz Workshop for Strings with the Mile High Jazz Band in 2008, the students formed an ensemble 2009. In 2011, STRAZZ performed for the Nevada Governor's Arts Award Ceremony in Carson City, at which Sue Jesch, their founder and leader, was honored for her leadership in Arts Education.

STRAZZ will perform as a prelude to Starr Nixdorf's World Dance Open Floor, held the third Friday each month at Comma Coffee. World Dance Open Floor is free, all ages fun - a performance night for dancers much like an open mic for musicians or comedians. Styles of dance include Hip Hop, Irish, Tahitian, Samba, Bollywood, Flamenco, Egyptian Raks Sharki, Hula, Turkish, Bellydance, Ballroom; truly any dance style from anywhere in the world. This night's World Dance is a benefit for Carson City Symphony's youth strings programs.

Carson Chamber Singers to Perform for American Legion
Sunday, Aug. 20, 2017

The Carson Chamber Singers of Carson City, Nevada, will participate in a patriotic memorial service at the 99th annual American Legion National Convention in Reno on Sunday, August 20, 2017, 11 a.m., at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center.

The Singers will present a choral rendition of "What a Wonderful World," arranged by Mark Brymer, and a hymn, "For the Fallen," composed by Eleanor Daley.

Founded in 1985 as a performing group of the Carson City Symphony Association, the Carson Chamber Singers have been conducted by Michael Langham since 2012.

They have sung at several venues in Northern Nevada and California and ten years ago, they sang for the 89th National American Legion Convention in Reno. Glade Myler, tenor, said "members of the group are proud to have been selected again to sing for the veterans who have dedicated themselves selflessly to preserve our freedoms, especially do they salute those who have given all for the cause."

The Carson Chamber Singers and the Carson City Symphony Chorus, a larger choral group open to all high-school age and above who want to sing with an orchestra, will begin rehearsals in September for fall and winter concerts. They perform in six or more concerts each year. Rehearsals are Tuesday evenings at the Carson High School Choral Room.

Rehearsals Begin for October Symphony Concert
on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2017

Attention musicians! The Carson City Symphony will begin rehearsals for the 2017-18 concert season on Wednesday, August 30, 2017, 7:00 to 9:15 p.m., at the Carson High School band room, 1111 N. Saliman Road in Carson City.

The Symphony, conducted by David Bugli, is a volunteer orchestra of about 55 players who perform music from the 15th to 21st centuries. It is open to string players at any time without audition, and to other instrumentalists when positions are available. Current openings are for strings, especially violas and basses, and for horns. Musicians who are interested in joining should contact the Symphony at 775-883-4154.

The repertoire for the October 22 concert is:

The Symphony's choral groups, Carson Chamber Singers and Carson City Symphony Chorus, begin rehearsals on August 29, at 6:30 p.m., at the Carson High choral room. First concert, "Mostly Mozart," will be presented on Tuesday, October 24, in Carson City and Sunday, October 29, in Virginia City. Consort Canzona, the Symphony's early music instrumental and vocal ensemble, plans to begins rehearsals on Monday, September 11, at the First Baptist Church, Carson City. For rehearsal time and information, contact Director Lora Mills, loradmills@hotmail.com.

Carson City Symphony Association Announces
Second Annual Scholarship for Music Education

Media Release - Sept. 25, 2017: The Carson City Symphony Association announces the second annual instrumental music scholarship for Carson City students age 5 to 17. The scholarship was established by a generous gift from Jennifer and John Webley in memory of Rosemary Nebesky, former board member and friend of the Carson City Symphony Association.

The award of $250 to $1,000 is to further the student's music education. It can be used, for example, for lessons, workshop, summer camp, master class, etc. Funds will be paid to the teacher or program, not to the individual applicant.

Application form can by downloaded from the Symphony website, CCSymphony.com (see below), and may be available from school music teachers. Completed applications and supporting documents will be accepted by the Symphony at P.O. Box 2001, Carson City, NV 89702-2001, and must be received by Wednesday, November 15.

Symphony Youth Strings
Free After-School Cello Classes Begin Oct. 13, 2017

Media Release - October 3, 2017:Carson City Symphony's after-school cello class for students in grades 5 and up begins Friday, October 13, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., at the Violin Studio, 357 Fairview Drive, Carson City. Lou Groffman, Principal Cellist of the Symphony, will teach the tuition-free, weekly class. The Symphony will provide instruments for students who don't have their own.

Enrollment is limited to provide maximum individual instruction in a small group setting. Fifth graders who complete the class will be ready to join their middle-school orchestras in September. Students will also have the opportunity to perform in Symphony Youth Strings concerts in December and April at the Carson City Community Center.

Presents Artist-in-Residence Workshop
with Violinist Carla Trynchuk
Thursday, October 16, 2017

The Carson City Symphony Association will hold an Artist-in-Residence Workshop on Thursday, October 16, 2017, from 6:15 to 8:00 p.m., in the band room at Carson High School, 1111 N. Saliman Road. The workshop features Carla Trynchuk, distinguished violin soloist, Professor of Music, and director of the string program at Andrews University in Michigan. She will be in Carson City to perform as guest soloist with the Carson City Symphony on Sunday, October 22, 2017. The Artist-in-Residence event is free and open to the public.

Ms. Trynchuk will work with STRAZZ, 13 advanced strings students from Carson City Symphony's "Symphony Youth Strings" program. STRAZZ includes students from Carson Middle School, Eagle Valley Middle School, and Carson High School orchestras. The students will play and rehearse string orchestra and quartet versions of the American String Quartet by Anton’n Dvor‡k. Student musicians and the public are invited to attend as observers.

To demonstrate ensemble playing, Ms. Trynchuk and Dr. Brian Fox, Concertmaster of the Carson City Symphony and Director of Orchestras for the Carson City School District, will perform a violin and viola duet.

Ms. Trynchuk will also give a short presentation on the Concerto in D minor for Violin and Orchestra by Jean Sibelius, which she will perform with the Carson City Symphony on Sunday, October 22, 2017, at the Carson City Community Center. She will play excerpts from the solo violin part of the concerto and discuss its history, style, and composer.

The Artist-in-Residence Workshop is a partnership between the Carson City Symphony Association and the Carson City School District, and is funded in part by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council. Not Quite Ready for Carnegie Hall Players
Adult Intermediate String Ensemble Seeks Members

Media release: October 18, 2017: Not Quite Ready for Carnegie Hall Players (NQR), a program of the Carson City Symphony Association for adults who recently began to play - or returned to playing - string instruments, is looking for additional people who want a chance to play with a friendly, noncompetitive, welcoming ensemble.

NQR meets weekly, September to June, on Thursday mornings from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive, under the direction of Symphony Education Director Sue Jesch and Associate Concertmaster Laura Gibson. Participants, ranging in age from mid-thirties to over eighty, develop skills in ensemble music playing and performance.

Laura Gibson, a coach for the group, said, "Some of our players have 'graduated' from NQR and now play with local community orchestras. This leaves openings for more violin, viola, cello, and bass players. NQR is a drop-in activity with no auditions and no fees, although donations are welcome. We even provide the sheet music!"

Carson City Symphony Opens 34th Season
Sunday, October 22, 2017

The Carson City Symphony, directed by David Bugli, will open its 34th season on Sunday, October 22, 2017, at 4:00 p.m., with a concert at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater, 851 E. William Street in Carson City. The concert features guest violin soloist Carla Trynchuk.

Tickets are $15 general admission; $12 for seniors, students, and Symphony Association members; and free for youth age 18 and under. Tickets are on sale at the Nevada Day Office, 716 N. Carson St., online at CCSymphony.com, or at the door. Season tickets at discounted prices are available from the Symphony at 775-883-4154.

The program includes Aethelinda by Jeffrey S. Bishop, Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 by Edvard Grieg, Hungarian Dances Nos. 5 and 6 by Johannes Brahms, and Concerto for Violin and Orchestra by Jean Sibelius. Pre-show entertainment in the lobby by begins at 3:00 p.m., a Meet-the-Soloist concert preview in the Sierra Room begins at 3:15 p.m., and a dinner reception follows the concert. The preview, hosted by Conductor David Bugli, will include discussions with Carla Trynchuk about the concert, composers, and music. The post-concert reception will be at Red's Old 395 Grill. Originally from Canada, violinist Carla Trynchuk has performed as soloist with orchestras and in recitals throughout North America and in Europe, Asia, and Australia. A graduate of the Juilliard School of Music in New York, she is Professor of Music and Director of the String Program at Andrews University in Michigan.

While in Carson City, Ms. Trynchuk will lead an Artist-in-Residence workshop for STRAZZ, advanced students of Carson City Symphony's Youth Strings Programs. The workshop, on Thursday, October 19, will be at the Carson High Band Room at 6:15 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

The Sunday concert is part of Daniel Pearl World Music Days, an annual global event affirming the ideals of tolerance, friendship, and shared humanity, inspired by the life and work of journalist and musician Daniel Pearl. It also celebrates National Arts and Humanities Month, a coast-to-coast collective celebration of culture in America.

Carson City Symphony is a community orchestra of about 60 players who perform music from the 15th to the 21st centuries. The 2017-18 concert season is supported with public funding through the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Carson Chamber Singers, conducted by Michael Langham, will present its 2017 Fall Concerts on Tuesday, October 24, 2017, at 7:30 p.m. at Shepherd of the Sierra, 3680 US Highway 395 South in Carson City and on Saturday, October 28, 2017, at 6:30 p.m. at St. Mary's in the Mountains, 111 S. E Street in Virginia City.

The program, Mostly Mozart, features Gloria from the Twelfth Mass, Laudate Dominium, Regina Coeli, Missa Brevis (Organ Mass), and Ave Verum Corpus, all by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Soloists are Jana Whitson, Diane Phillips, Nancy Jones, Jenice Provost, Sally Rogers, Elizabeth Tetz, Laura Hale, Nick Perondi, and Jon Rabben.

Carson City Symphony Chorus to Begin Rehearsals for
Holiday Treat Concert

Media Release - Oct. 30, 2017: Attention singers! The Carson City Symphony Chorus will begin rehearsals on Tuesday, October 31, 2017, for the December 10 Holiday Treat concert with the Carson City Symphony. Rehearsals are Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. at the Choral Room in Carson High School, 1111 N. Saliman Road in Carson City.

The Carson City Symphony Chorus welcomes singers, high-school age and above, without audition and without fees. Director Michael Langham said, "All singers are encouraged to participate. We are especially looking for men, and also for women who sing low, into the tenor range." Joyful Noise Carson Children's Choir, the newest affiliate of the Carson City Symphony Association, will be performing on Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017, at 5:30 p.m. at Heritage Park in Gardnerville (1447 Courthouse Alley) as part of the Carson Valley Christmas Kick-off.

Joyful Noise Carson Children's Choir is under the direction of the group's founder, Nancy Jones.

Consort Canzona Presents Holiday Concert in Carson City
Friday, Dec. 1, 2017

Consort Canzona, a select group of instrumentalists and singers specializing in early music, will present "An Early Music Christmas" concert for the holiday season on Friday, December 1, 2017, at 7:30 p.m., at Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church, 3680 Highway 395 (just south of Best Buy) in Carson City. Admission is free, donations welcome.

The concert features a setting by Michael Praetorius, who lived from 1571 to 1621, of a traditional Christmas Carol, In Dulci Jubilo, that dates from the Middle Ages. Another highlight is Personent Hodie (On this day Earth Shall Ring), a German carol from 1360 arranged by contemporary English composer John Rutter in 1974. The program also includes Mirabile Mysterium, Ave Maria, Es Ist Ein Rose Entsprungen, and more.

Carson City musician Sharon Kientz formed Consort Canzona in 2009 for recorders, cello, and harpsichord. Singers were added in 2011. The group is directed by Lora Mills, who is also Assistant Director of the UNR Chamber Singers.

Joyful Noise Performs for Downtown Business
Association Wine Walk

Joyful Noise Carson Children's Choir will be performing on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the Nevada Artists Association Gallery in the Brewery Arts Center Building (449 West King St.) for the Downtown Business Association's Wine Walk, which runs from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. The Children's Choir is under the direction of the group's founder, Nancy Jones.

All are welcome to hear Joyful Noise sing, even if they are not Wine Walkers. The event is free and is presented in conjunction with the Carson City Art & Culture Coalition.

Symphony Youth Strings present
"Around the World in Music"

Symphony Youth Strings, Carson City Symphony's after-school program, presents "Around the World in Music" on Tuesday, December 5, 2017, at 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St., Carson City. String players, including Carson City public-, private-, and home-schooled students, grades 2 to 12, will perform several pieces, from classics to folk tunes. Admission is free.

The concert was programmed by Carson City Symphony's Education Director Sue Jesch and is conducted by Associate Concertmaster Laura Gibson and Principal Cellist Lou Groffman. It features beginning violinists in grades two to five; beginning cellists; and string ensembles: Allegro, beginning; Vivace, intermediate; and STRAZZ, advanced.

"These young musicians play to enthusiastic crowds," said David Bugli, Music Director of the Carson City Symphony. "You will be entertained and impressed with how well they play such a great variety of musical styles."

It's a Holiday Treat for all - a feast of seasonal and holiday entertainment in many styles! The Carson City Symphony presents the 34th annual Holiday Treat concert on Sunday, December 10, 2017, 4:00 p.m., at the Bob Boldrick Theater in the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street.

Treat your whole family: tickets are $15 general admission; $12 for seniors, students, and Symphony Association members; and free age 18 and under. Tickets are available in advance at the Nevada Day Store, 716 N. Carson Street; online at CCSymphony.com; and at the door.

The Symphony will be joined on the program by the Carson City Symphony Chorus and the Victorian Dancers. Pre-concert entertainment by STRAZZ youth strings ensemble begins at 3:00 p.m. in the lobby. STRAZZ will play music from the American String Quartet by Antonin Dvorak.

The Carson City Symphony, conducted by Music Director-Conductor David Bugli, will perform several works, including The Bells of Christmas, "Dance of the Tumblers" from The Snow Maiden, and Festive Sounds of Hanukah. The Carson City Symphony Chorus, directed by Michael Langham, will join with the Symphony for Gwyneth Walker's Rejoice! and Conrad Susa's A Christmas Garland.

The Victorian Dancers, choreographed by Tiffany Alm and directed by Sonja Radig, will whirl and swirl to the sound of Scott Joplin's Bethena Rag-time Waltz and Leroy Anderson's familiar favorite, Sleigh Ride. Performers and audience will join together for the traditional Holiday Treat finale, A Christmas Singalong.

Joyful Noise Performs at The Lodge Assisted Living
Monday, Dec. 11, 2017

Joyful Noise Carson Children's Choir will be spreading a little holiday cheer. They will perform on Mon., Dec. 11, 2017, at 4:00 p.m. at The Lodge Assisted Living, 2200 E. Long St., Carson City. The vocal group is conducted by Nancy Jones and is the newest affiliate of the Carson City Symphony Association.

The event is free and open to the public.

Three Carson City Students Awarded
Rosemary Nebesky Memorial Scholarships

Media Release - Dec. 11, 2017: Jasmine Wong-Fortunato, Gabriel Covington, and Sy'Johnniqa Moore were awarded the second annual Rosemary Nebesky Memorial Scholarships by the Carson City Symphony Association this month. The scholarship was established by John and Jennifer Webley of Santa Rosa, Calif., in memory Rosemary Nebesky, who loved music, loved children, and had been a friend and board member of the Carson City Symphony Association. It is awarded each year to one or more Carson City students age 5 to 17 for instrumental music lessons. The winners this year were selected from several highly recommended applicants.

Jasmine Wong-Fortunato, 14, an eighth grader at Carson Middle School, plays in three bands and in orchestra, on different instruments in each - flute, bassoon, saxophone, and viola. Flute is her main instrument. She plans make music education her career and will use the scholarship for private lessons on bassoon.

Gabriel Covington, 16, a junior at Carson High School, plays violin in the Carson High Chamber Orchestra, the Reno Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, and in Carson City Symphony's advanced youth strings ensemble, STRAZZ. He also plays piano. He plans to use the scholarship to attend Alasdair Fraser's Sierra Fiddle Camp this summer to learn techniques of Scottish and other styles of fiddling and playing by ear.

Sy'Johnniqa Moore, 16, a junior at Carson High School, plays viola in the school's advanced orchestra, the Carson High Chamber Orchestra. She said she is able to express all her feelings through her viola, without saying a word. Her orchestra director, Dr. Brian Fox, said she is one of his most improved students and has great potential for continued growth. She will use the scholarship for private lessons on viola.

Joyful Noise Carson Children's Choir
To Begin Spring Session on Monday, January 22, 2018

Media Release - January 11, 2018: Carson City Symphony Association announces the Joyful Noise Carson Children's Choir will begin Spring Semester rehearsals on Monday, January 22, 2018, 3:45 to 4:30 p.m. The weekly sessions will be held onstage at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 W. King Street, Carson City, through May.

Joyful Noise Carson Children's Choir, directed by Nancy Jones and accompanied by Liz Hastings, welcomes children ages 4 to 12. Each rehearsal develops students' musical skills, strong singing voices, and joy in music as they prepare for a performance in May. Tuition for the semester is $60 per child, or $45 each for two or more in a family.

Jones said, "This choir will give your child the opportunity to learn basic music concepts of rhythm, pitch, dynamics, expression, melody, and performance in cooperation with a small group. The choir will sing a variety of tunes - hymns and folk songs and silly, playful pieces."

Has Begun

Media Release - Dec. 19, 2017: Experience music through singing, listening, and performing for children ages 4-12.

Beginning January 22, 2018, rehearsals will be held weekly on Mondays at 3:45pm until 4:30 p.m. All rehearsals will be at the Brewery Arts Center Performace Stage. Each 45-minute rehearsal will teach musical skills, strong singing voices, and joy in music as the young singers prepare for a performance to be held at the beginning of May. Tuition for the semester is $60 a child with a special price for those enrolling with siblings at $45 each.

This choir will give your child the opportunity to learn basic music concepts of rhythm, pitch, dynamics, expression, melody, and performance in cooperation with a small group. The Joyful Noise choir will sing a variety of tunes-hymns and folk songs and silly, playful pieces. All children are welcome to participate.

Rehearsal Format:
Each rehearsal will include some of the following elements:

• welcome songs, vocal warm-ups, and melodic exercises using solfege syllables and hand symbols, and rhythm games
• simple movement to songs exploring tempo, steady beats, pauses, and dynamics in healthy singing voices
• learning and rehearsing performance pieces
• introduction and play with music notation and music reading

Artist-in-residence Cello Workshop and Master Class
with Dr. Stephen Framil

The Carson City Symphony Association will hold Artist-in-Residence Workshop and Masterclass on Thursday, February 22, 2018, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., in the band room at Carson High School, 1111 N. Saliman Road. The workshop features Stephen Framil, internationally renowned cello soloist, Music Director and Conductor of Camerata Philadelphia, and Artistic Director of the Port City Music Festival in North Carolina. Dr. Framil will be in Carson City to perform as guest soloist with the Carson City Symphony on February 25, 2018. The Artist-in-Residence event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Framil will work with cello students from Carson City Symphony's "Symphony Youth Strings" program; cello students from Carson Middle School, Eagle Valley Middle School, and Carson High School orchestras; and adult cellists in the community. To demonstrate ensemble playing, Dr. Framil and Lou Groffman, Principal Cellist of the Carson City Symphony and Symphony Youth Strings Instructor, will perform a duet. Dr. Framil will also give a short presentation on Cello Concerto No. 2 in E minor by Victor Herbert, which he will perform with the Carson City Symphony on Sunday, February 25, 2018, at the Carson City Community Center. He will play excerpts from the solo cello part of the concerto and discuss its history, style, and composer.

The Artist-in-Residence Workshop and Masterclassis a partnership between the Carson City Symphony Association and the Carson City School District, and is funded in part by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. An Evening of Music and Dessert

The Carson City Symphony Association presents "Music by Cellist-Composers," an elegant evening of music, conversation, wine, and dessert on Friday, February 23, 2018, at 7:00 p.m. at a private home, 2662 Danielle Drive in Carson City. The recital will introduce - or reacquaint - music lovers in our area with critically acclaimed cellist Stephen Framil, who has appeared as concert soloist, chamber musician, and conductor the world over. He will be accompanied by pianist Katie Lauder.

CC Symphony "Crosscurrents" Concert Features Cellist Stephen Framil

The Carson City Symphony, directed by David Bugli, presents it's first concert of 2018, "Crosscurrents," on Sunday, February 25, at 4:00 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater, 851 E. William Street in Carson City. The concert features guest cello soloist Stephen Framil playing Victor Herbert's Cello Concerto No. 2.

Tickets are $15 general admission; $12 for seniors, students, and Symphony Association members; and free for youth age 18 and under. Tickets are on sale at the Nevada Day Office, 716 N. Carson St., online at CCSymphony.com, or at the door.

The program also includes the "Karelia Suite" by Jean Sibelius, three "Slavonic Dances" by Antonin Dvorak, music from "Quadrophenia" by Pete Townshend, and "La Suerte de los Tontos" by Johnny Richards.

Pre-show entertainment in the lobby by the Nerds of Paradise - Brian Fox and Kat MacMartin, violins; Eric Stern, viola; and Evan Stern, cello - begins at 3:00 p.m. A Meet-the-Soloist concert preview in the Sierra Room begins at 3:15 p.m., and a dinner reception follows the concert. Internationally acclaimed cellist, Stephen Framil, is known for his musicianship, technique, and emotive power. He has performed as a soloist and conductor in Carnegie Weill and Avery-Fisher Halls in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, and other famous venues throughout the world. The April 25 concert will be his fourth performance with Carson City Symphony.

While in Carson City, Dr. Framil will lead an Artist-in-Residence Workshop and Masterclass for local cellists of all ages. The event, Thursday, February 22, 2018, will be at the Carson High Band Room at 6:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public. He will also perform a recital of music by cellist-composers with local pianist Katie Lauder. Carson Chamber Singers Perform Trio of Concerts
Hymns, Psalms, and Spirituals:

The Carson Chamber Singers, conducted by Michael Langham, will present a concert of Hymns, Psalms, and Spirituals at three locations:

• The first performance will be on Friday, April 6, at 7:00 p.m., at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 314 N. Division Street in Carson City.
• The second will be on Saturday, April 7, at 6:30 p.m., at St. Mary's in the Mountains Catholic Church, 111 S. E Street in Virginia City.
• The third will be on Sunday, April 8, at 5:00 p.m., at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 200 Island Avenue in Reno.

Highlights of the program include music from the Renaissance by 16th century Italian composer Giovanni Gabrielli, works by Russian church composer Pavel Grigorievich Chesnokov, and contemporary works by Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo and Nevada composer Eric Whitacre. Langham said, "We have the opportunity to premier a piece written early in the twenty-first century and re-arranged just for Carson Chamber Singers by Massachusetts resident Dr. David Anderegg."

Vocal soloists are Lucy Bouldin, Jana Whitson, Nick Perondi, and Jonathon Rabben. Instrumental soloists are violist Autumn Burnett and cellist Lou Groffman.

General admission tickets are $10, available online; at the Nevada Day Office, 716 N. Carson St., Carson City; and at the door. Youth ages 18 and under are admitted free.

Founded in 1985 as a performing group of the Carson City Symphony Association, the Carson Chamber Singers have been conducted by Michael Langham since 2012. They have sung at several venues in Northern Nevada and in California as far as Sacramento. Last summer, they sang for the 99th National American Legion Convention in Reno.

The Carson Chamber Singers and the Carson City Symphony Chorus, a larger choral group open to all high-school age and above who want to sing with an orchestra, rehearse on Tuesday evenings at the Carson High School Choral Room. Consort Canzona Early Music Instrumental Ensemble and Joyful Noise Carson Children's Choir present a joint concert on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church, 3680 Highway 395 (just south of Best Buy). Both groups are affiliates of the Carson City Symphony. This free concert will be at 7:00 p.m. Donations are welcome.

The concert opens with a demonstration of Consort Canzona instruments: soprano, alto, and baritone recorders; harpsichord; and cello. Next, Joyful Noise Carson Children's Choir, directed by Nancy Jones and accompanied by Liz Hastings, will present four "Songs About Rainbows." The choir, now completing its second semester, is for children ages 4 to 12 who are developing their musical skills and love of singing.

Consort Canzona will play instrumental versions of several short pieces of music from the 1200s to the 1700s. These include songs and dances by Thomas Morley, Michael Praetorius, Anthony Holborne, and others. Harpsichordist Jane Giovacchini will play Sonate in La by Josep Freixenet and Les Bouffons by John Bull.

Symphony Youth Strings Concert
Music is for Life (goes to the movies)

Carson City Symphony's Youth Strings ensembles and Not Quite Ready For Carnegie Hall Players adult intermediate string ensemble will perform a "Music is for Life (goes to the movies)" concert on Thursday, April 26, 2018, at 6:30 p.m., at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street. The concert will present themes from movies including James Bond, The Sound of Music, Spartacus, and To Kill a Mockingbird. Admission is free.

The concert will feature performances by students from grade 2 through high school, including beginning violins and cellos; the Allegro, Vivace, and STRAZZ youth strings ensembles; the adult ensemble; and special guests.

Symphony Youth Strings is Carson City Symphony Association's tuition-free, after-school program for young string players. The Symphony's Not Quite Ready for Carnegie Hall Players is open to all adult intermediate-level string players. Both programs were founded in 2005 by Education Director Sue Jesch. Laura Gibson is violin and ensemble instructor; Lou Groffman is STRAZZ and cello instructor. About 75 students currently participate. Alexander Tutunov to Present Piano Master Class

Dr. Alexander Tutunov will be presenting a piano master class on Saturday, April 28, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. on the stage of the Bob Boldrick Theater in the Carson City Community Cente, 851 E. William St., Carson City. Students participating will have the opportunity to play on the Steinway grand piano that will be used in the April 29th concert at which Tutunov will perform the Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor.

The Carson City Symphony, directed by David Bugli, will feature pianist Alexander Tutunov on Sunday, April 29, 2018, at 4:00 p.m., at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater, 851 E. William Street in Carson City. Dr. Tutunov will perform Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. The concert will also showcase Symphony musicians Brian Fox, Concertmaster, and Eric Stern, Principal Violist (playing violin), in a performance of Vivaldi's Concerto for Two Violins in A minor.

Tickets are $15 general admission; $12 for seniors, students, and Symphony Association members; and free for youth age 18 and under. Tickets are on sale at the Nevada Day Office, 716 N. Carson St., online at CCSymphony.com, or at the door.

The program also includes Rossini's Semiramide Overture, and two movements from Elana Roussanova Lucas' Tatarian Dances (Harvest Dance and Wedding Dance).

Alexander Tutunov is widely recognized as one of the most outstanding virtuosos of the former Soviet Union. He performs in Europe, China, Mexico, and the United States as a recitalist, soloist with orchestra, and on radio and television. He is Professor of Music, Director of Keyboard Studies, and Artist in Residence at Southern Oregon University and is also in demand as an adjudicator for piano competitions. He has previously appeared in performances with the Carson City Symphony in 2001, 2002, and 2008.

While in Carson City, Dr. Tutunov will lead a Masterclass for local pianists and observers of all ages. The class on Saturday, April 28, 2018, will begin at 2:00 p.m., onstage at the Carson City Community Center. It is free and open to the public. Dr. Brian Fox is the Concertmaster of the Symphony and teaches strings in Carson High School and the two middle schools. Eric Stern is currently serving as the principal of the viola section. Both are members of Nerds of Paradise, the string quartet that provided lobby entertainment at the February 25th concert. The Nerds of Paradise will be presenting a house recital at the Bliss Mansion on June 2nd.

Nerds of Paradise Present House Recital
Saturday, June 2, 2018

The Nerds of Paradise, a string quartet composed of members of the Carson City Symphony, will be presenting a house recital on Saturday, June 2, 2018, at 7:30 p.m. at the beautiful and historic Bliss Mansion in Carson City. The Bliss Mansion is located at 608 Elizabeth St., Carson City, NV. General admission tickets are available for $25, and tickets for Carson City Symphony Association members will be $20. Tickets may be purchased at the Nevada Day Office (716 N. Carson St., Suite 100, Carson City) or online. Wine and desserts will be provided. Seating is limited to 35 guests, so reserve or get your tickets early.

The Nerds of Paradise specializes in string quartet arrangements of popular songs, but also plays standard repertoire. The versatile members of the quartet are Dr. Brian Fox, concertmaster of the Carson City Symphony, on violin; Kat MacMartin, principal of the Symphony's second violin section, on violin; Eric Stern, principal violist with the Symphony, on viola; and Evan Stern, principal bassist with the Symphony, on cello.

34th Annual Pops Party Concert at Capital Amphitheater

Carson City Symphony's thirty-fourth annual Pops Party concert will be held at the Capital Amphitheater, between the Capitol and Legislature Buildings, on Sunday, June 10, 2018, at 6:00 p.m. The program features the Carson City Symphony, Carson City Symphony Chorus, and guest singer Cherie Shipley. Admission is free.

The Symphony, directed by David Bugli, and the Symphony Chorus will perform pops music, music from musicals, films, and marches. Guest Conductor Carlos Rafael will lead the Symphony in selections from Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story. Bernstein would have been celebrating his 100th birthday in 2018. Among other things, the concert will feature music by Charles Strouse, composer of "Annie," who celebrated his 90th birthday on June 7.

Cherie Shipley, lead singer in the Take This jazz combo and the Sagebrush Rebels country-western band, is a popular performer on casino stages, in nightclubs, and at community venues. She will sing new arrangements of "So Many Stars" and "Bump Bounce Boogie" with the orchestra.

Seating is on the lawn; bring blankets or lawn chairs. Parking is in the garage on the corner of Fifth and Stewart Streets or on the street. Snacks and raffle tickets will be available.

Carson City Symphony Chorus to Begin
Rehearsals for July 4th Concert in Genoa

Media Release - June 11, 2018: Attention singers! The Carson City Symphony Chorus will begin rehearsals on Tuesday, June 12, for the July 4th concert with the Carson City Symphony in Genoa, NV, at the Genoa Americana Celebration. Rehearsals are Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 314 N. Division Street, Carson City.

The Carson City Symphony Chorus welcomes singers, high-school age and above, without audition and without fees. Director Michael Langham said, "All singers are encouraged to participate. We are especially looking for men, and also for women who sing low, into the tenor range." CC Symphony to Appear in Genoa Americana Celebration

The Carson City Symphony and Carson City Symphony Chorus will appear on the the Genoa Americana Celebration on Wednesday, July 4, 2018, at Mormon Station State Park at 4:30 p.m. (time is tentatively scheduled). The Symphony has appeared on this annual Fourth-of-July event in Genoa since 2014. Joining the Symphony is talented singer, Cherie Shipley.

Strings in the Summer 2018
July 26 to August 16, 2018

Strings in the Summer presents two tracks this summer.

The first track is "Introduction to Fiddle and Folk Music." It will meet on Thursdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on July 26, August 2, August 9, and August 16. This is designed primarily for younger students, and for violinsts, violists, and cellists of any age who have limited experience. Participants must be able to play a one-octave D scale and read notes within the staff.

The second track is "String Ensemble." It will meet on Thursdays from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. on July 26, August 2, August 9, and August 16. This is designed for advanced beginner to intermediate players of all ages. It will involve fun tunes for orchestra in arrangements for violin, viola, cello, and bass.

All classes are held at St. Paul's Lutheran Family Church, 1201 N. Saliman Road, Carson City. There will be a concert featuring participants on Friday, August 17, at the Carson Mall at noon. Nerds of Paradise Play for Wine Walk

The Nerds of Paradise, a string quartet composed of players from the Carson City Symphony, will be performing for the Wine Walk in Carson City on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2018, from 2:30 to 4:30 at the Carson City Art Gallery and Pottery.

This is a free performance. To participate in the Wine Walk, purchase your tickets at The Carson Nugget, Carson Jewelry & Loan, Touched By Angels, Purple Avocado, Cactus Jacks Casino, The Brewery Arts Center, or Comma Coffee for $15 w/o an official wine walk glass or $10 with the official wine walk glass. Nerds of Paradise Recital in Reno

The Nerds of Paradise, a string quartet composed of players from the Carson City Symphony, will be performing a house recital at a private home in Reno on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2018, at 7:00 p.m. The event is a benefit for the Carson City School District orchestra program. Dr. Brian Fox, first violinist with the Nerds of Paradise and Concertmaster of the Carson City Symphony, is in charge of the orchestra program in Carson High School and the two middle schools in Carson City. Cost is $25.

Strings in the Summer Concert

The Strings in the Summer program will present an end-of-session concert at Carson Mall on Friday, Aug. 17, 2018, at noon. This free event comes at the end of the four-week Strings in the Summer program sponsored by the Carson City Symphony Assoc.
