  Nora Ahumada

Media Release - January 9, 2023: Braedan Wedderburn, Sujwal Reddy Yeedunuthula, and Nora Ahumada were awarded the seventh annual Rosemary Nebesky Memorial Scholarships by the Carson City Symphony Association this year. The scholarship was established by John and Jennifer Webley of Santa Rosa, Calif., in memory of Rosemary Nebesky, who loved music, loved children, and had been a friend and board member of the Carson City Symphony Association. It is awarded each year to one or more Carson City students age 5 to 17 for instrumental music lessons. The winners this year were selected from several well qualified applicants.

Braedan Wedderburn, 12 years old, is a sixth-grade student at Carson Middle School. He has been playing trumpet and cello for 1 year. Although he plays cello in his school orchestra, he hasn't had private lessons. His orchestra director, Dr. Brian Fox, said Braedan is dedicated to learning cello and practices during his lunchtime at school. He will use the scholarship for private cello lessons with Priscilla Hawkins.

Sujwal Reddy Yedunuthula, 11 years old, is a sixth-grade student at Eagle Valley Middle School and has studied violin for 4 years and piano for 1 year, plays in Carson City Symphony's Youth Strings intermediate ensemble, and successfully auditioned for the Northern Zone Honor Orchestra. His violin teacher, Sue Jesch, said Sujwal is a quick learner and thrives on being challenged. He will use the scholarship to continue private violin lessons.

Nora Ahumada, 13 years old, is an eighth-grade student at Eagle Valley Middle school. She has been studying violin for 5 years, beginning in the Symphony Youth Strings. She is now Principal First violin in her school orchestra, and participates in the Honor Orchestra, Solo and Ensemble Festival, and EVMS Chamber Orchestra. Her orchestra director, Dr. Fox, said Nora loves music and will be a lifelong musician. She will use the scholarship for private violin lessons with Laura Gibson, Associate Concertmaster of Carson City Symphony.

The next round of scholarships will be awarded in fall of 2023. For more information about the scholarship and the application process, contact the Symphony at 775-883-4154 or carsoncitysymphony@gmail.com.

Photograph of Twain by A.F. Bradley

The Carson City Symphony, conducted by Music Director David Bugli, presents its 217th concert, "Becoming Mark Twain," on Sunday, April 23, 2023, at 4:00 p.m., at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater, 851 E. William Street in Carson City. The concert is being presented in conjunction with Mark Twain Days, April 21-23. Information about Mark Twain Days, celebrating one of Nevada's most prolific, witty, wise (and wise-cracking) writers, is available at MarkTwainDays.com.

Photograph of Andrew Sords

Noted concert violinist Andrew Sords will join the orchestra to play Felix Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor. Sords has a celebrated career as a soloist, recitalist, and in performances with his trio. Having appeared with nearly 300 orchestras on 4 continents, he has been cited for combining visceral virtuosity with a ravishing tone. This will be his fourth appearance with the Carson City Symphony. His website is at andrewsords.com.

The program also includes Mozart's "The Magic Flute" Overture, Louis Moreau Gottschalk's "Pasquinade," and J.P. Meder's "Hank Monk Schottische."

He's a part-time radio host for KUNR Public Radio and full-time host for KNCJ (Nevada Classical and Jazz), and has announced at Reno Aces games, emceed regional events, and been a Ghost Walk Guide. He read a biography of Sam Clemens/Mark Twain on his 10,000-mile post-undergraduate trip around America and was captivated by the man and myth; moving to Carson City cemented the relationship.

Tickets are $18 general admission; $15 for seniors, students, and Symphony Association members; and free for youth age 18 and under. Tickets are for sale online at CCSymphony.com and will be available at the door. "Flex" tickets at discounted prices are available from the Symphony at 775-883-4154.

The Carson City concert will be on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at 7:00 p.m., at Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church, 3680 N. Hwy. 395. Admission to this concert is free, donations welcome.

Hutton said, "Two years before Handel's Messiah was written, the Baroque master wrote an oratorio (very similar in style) telling the story of the Exodus. If you enjoy Handel's Messiah, you will love this portrayal of the Exodus! It includes dramatic settings recounting the plagues and the parting of the Red Sea - you don't want to miss this!" These will be Hutton's final concerts as director of the Carson Chamber Singers before he begins his appointment as Assistant Professor of Music: Choral Music Education and Assistant Director of Choral Activities, at Boise State University.

Founded in 1985 as a performing group of the Carson City Symphony Association, the Carson Chamber Singers have sung at several venues in northern Nevada and in California as far west as Sacramento. They sang for the 99th National American Legion Convention in Reno in 2017, have sung with the Reno Philharmonic, and perform regularly with the Carson City Symphony, most recently in the Holiday Treat concert in December 2022.

Open to singers high-school age and above, the Carson Chamber Singers generally perform in five concerts each year. Participation is free.
