"Strings in the Summer" Present Performance

Carson City Symphony Association's "Strings in the Summer 2021" program will present an informal performance at Carson Mall on Friday, July 9, 2021, at 10:00 a.m.. Laura Gibson, Associate Concertmaster of Carson City Symphony, is the instructor.

Two groups, "Fiddle and Fun" for younger students, and for violinists, violists, and cellists of any age who have limited experience, and "String Ensemble," for string players with more advanced experience, will be preparing for this event July 6-8. The performance is free and open to the public.

Carson City Symphony Association's educational programs are funded, in part, by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency; and by private donations.

The Carson City Symphony Association will hold its Annual Meeting on Sunday, July 11, 2021, at 6:30 p.m. in person at the Lake Glen Manor Club House, 164 Lake Glen Drive, Carson City.The meeting will include election of officers for the new fiscal year 2021-2022.

Carson Chamber Singers to Begin Rehearsals
for 37th Season at Carson High School

Media Release - August 12, 2021: The Carson Chamber Singers, a performing group of the Carson City Symphony Association, will begin rehearsals on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, for their 37th season. Rehearsals are Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. under the direction of Richard Hutton at the Choral Room in Carson High School, 1111 N. Saliman Road in Carson City.

For the first concert, in November, Choral Director Hutton has selected Sergei Rachmaninoff's "All-Night Vigil," commonly referred to as "Vespers." He said, "It is a masterwork that the singers would be excited to perform, and is accessible, while still challenging. The composer is familiar, but most singers haven't performed this work. The chant-based music is gorgeous."

Founded in 1985 as a performing group of the Carson City Symphony Association, the Carson Chamber Singers have sung at several venues in northern Nevada and in California. They have sung with the Reno Philharmonic and perform regularly with the Carson City Symphony.

Ricky Hutton Plans Rachmaninoff Project for the Fall

Carson City Symphony to Start Rehearsals Aug. 8

The Carson City Symphony will start rehearsals for its 38th season on Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2021, at 7:00 p.m. at the Carson High School band and orchestra room. The Symphony will be preparing for the "LatinXpressions II" concert at the Carson City Community Center on Sunday, October 24, 2021, at 4:00 p.m. The guest soloist for the concert is flutist Ellen Burr. The concert will be the second concert in our LatinXpressions series, which we began with a concert on February 23, 2020. The remaining three concerts in the LatinXpressions series were cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. One or more of the LatinXpressions concerts will take place in the spring.

Consort Canzona Early Music Instrumental Ensemble
Begins Rehearsals at Carson City Senior Center

Media Release - Sept. 19, 2021: Consort Canzona, an early music performing group of the Carson City Symphony Association, rehearses on Mondays at 7:00 p.m. at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive. The ensemble - recorders, cello, and harpsichord - plays music from the Renaissance through the Baroque periods and has openings for experienced recorder players.

Current COVID-19 guidelines require face masks be worn in the building except when playing, and that musicians be fully vaccinated. Participation is free; donations and Symphony Association memberships are welcome.

Not Quite Ready for Carnegie Hall Players
Adult Intermediate String Ensemble Seeks Members

Media Release - Sept. 19, 2021: Not Quite Ready for Carnegie Hall Players (NQR), a program of the Carson City Symphony Association for adults who recently began to play - or returned to playing-string instruments - is looking for additional people who want a chance to play with a friendly, noncompetitive, welcoming ensemble.

NQR meets weekly, September to June, on Thursday mornings from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive, under the direction of Symphony Associate Concertmaster Laura Gibson. Participants, ranging in age from twenties to eighties, develop skills in ensemble music playing and performance. Current guidelines require face masks be worn in the building.

Laura Gibson said, "Some of our players have 'graduated' from NQR and now play with local community orchestras, and some play in both. We have openings for more violin, viola, cello, and bass players. NQR is a drop-in activity with no auditions and no fees, although donations and Symphony Association memberships are welcome. We even provide the sheet music!"

Cello Talk and Workshop with Priscilla Hawkins

The Carson City Symphony Association will hold a Cello Lecture-Demonstration-Workshop on Tuesday, September 21, 2021, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., in the orchestra/band room at Carson High School, 1111 N. Saliman Road, Carson City. The event features Priscilla Hawkins, who has performed as cello soloist and chamber musician; taught strings and presented cello workshops in Michigan and California; been guest Master Teacher in the Azores Islands; and recorded two CDs.

Ms. Hawkins will discuss "The History and Development of the Cello," and then lead a workshop on "The Mechanics of Producing Your Best Cello Tone." The presentation will include a rare, brief video of brilliant cellist Emanuel Feuermann playing "Spinning Song" by Popper in the 1930s.

Carson City Symphony's "Symphony Youth Strings" cellists, Carson City Middle and High School orchestra cellists, and adult cellists will participate. Student musicians and the public are invited to attend as observers.

Admission to the Cello Lecture-Demonstration-Workshop is free. Current COVID-19 guidelines require all participants and visitors to be masked in the school building.

This event is a partnership between the Carson City Symphony Association and the Carson City School District, and is funded in part by a grant from Nevada Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Cassidy Robinson, trumpet player with the Carson City Symphony and the Mile High Jazz - and also music teacher at Empire Elementary School - has applied for the Dolan Class Project Grant to start a mariachi program in the Carson City School District. In order to do this, she needs community members to vote for her project. Public voting ends Thursday, Oct. 21, 2021.

Ellen Burr, guest flute soloist with the Carson City Symphony, presented two workshops on Friday morning, Oct. 22, 2021, in the Carson High School band/orchestra room. The workshops were sponsored by financial contributions from Yamaha Corporation, Absolute Music in Reno, and the Carson City Symphony Assoc. Ms. Burr is a Yamaha Artist.

Carson City Symphony Association Announces
Sixth Annual Scholarship for Music Education

Media Release - Oct. 19, 2021 (revised 11/16/21): The Carson City Symphony Association announces the sixth annual instrumental music scholarship for Carson City students age 5 to 17. The scholarship was established by a generous gift from Jennifer and John Webley in memory of Rosemary Nebesky, former board member and friend of the Carson City Symphony Association.

The award of $250 to $1,000 is to further the student's music education. It can be used, for example, for lessons, workshop, summer camp, master class, etc. To qualify, a student must live in Carson City, attend school in Carson City, or study with a music teacher in Carson City. Lessons can be in person or remote. Funds will be paid to the teacher or program, not to the individual applicant.

The application form can be downloaded from the Symphony website (see below) and may be available from school music teachers. Completed applications and supporting documents will be accepted by the Symphony at P.O. Box 2001, Carson City, NV 89702-2001, and must be postmarked by Friday, November 19, 2021.

Association presents Ellen Burr, Flutist, in House Recital

The Carson City Symphony Association presents "Flute and Piano House Recital," an evening of music, conversation, wine, and dessert on Friday, October 22, 2021, at 7:30 p.m. at a private home, 191 Heidi Circle in Carson City. The recital will introduce music lovers in our area to world acclaimed musicians from southern California, flutist Ellen Burr and pianist Lorenzo S‡nchez.

Tickets are $25 and are available online at CCSymphony.com or by calling the Symphony at 775-883-4154 for reservations. Space is limited. COVID vaccinations are required and masks (when not eating or drinking) are required.

The varied program of music by composers from Baroque to Contemporary periods includes works by J.S. Bach, Bohuslav Martinu, Mark Mower, Ned Rorem, and others.

Ellen Burr has performed and composed for numerous films, television and radio shows, chamber music, dance, theater and opera, and has had over fifty of her compositions performed in the United States and Europe. She is featured on more than twenty CDs in styles as diverse as experimental classical and Celtic folk.

While in Carson City, Ellen Burr also will lead workshops for flute and band students on Friday, October 22 (not Thursday, as previously reported), at Carson High School, and will play Verdugo, Concerto for Flute and Orchestra by Michael Kibbe with the Carson City Symphony on Sunday, October 24, 4:00 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center.

Symphony Season 38 Opens with "LatinXpressions II" Concert

The Carson City Symphony, directed by David Bugli, will open its 38th season on Sunday, October 24, 2021, at 4:00 p.m., with "LatinXpressions II" at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater, 851 E. William Street in Carson City. The concert is the second of four that highlight music of Latin America as well as classical compositions.

Ellen Burr, featured flute soloist, will perform Verdugo, a concerto by Michael Kibbe. The program also includes Sones de Mariachi by Blas Galindo; Milonga del çngel by Astor Piazzola (conducted by Concertmaster Brian Fox); çgua de Beber by Antonio Carlos Jobim; and La Suerte de los Tontos, by Johnny Richards.

The orchestra also will play A Time to Vote by Gwyneth Walker. Music Director David Bugli said, "We had originally planned to play this piece last year in commemoration of the hundredth anniversary of women's suffrage. In 2021, it is still relevant."

Tickets are $18 general admission; $15 for seniors, students, and Symphony Association members; and free for youth age 18 and under. Tickets are on sale via the link below or at the door. Rachmaninoff's All-Night Vigil

Carson Chamber Singers, a 50 person chorus directed by Richard Hutton, performs the a cappella masterwork, All-Night Vigil by Sergei Rachmaninoff in two beautiful venues: St. Thomas Aquinas Cathedral (310 W. 2nd Street, Reno) on Saturday Nov. 6th at 7:00 p.m., and St. Mary in the Mountains (111 E Street, Virginia City) on Sunday November 7th at 4:00 p.m. The concert is 60 minutes without intermission.

Hutton said, "All-Night Vigil, commonly known as 'Vespers,' is a work that the singers are excited to perform. The chant-based music is gorgeous."

Rehearsals for Holiday Concert

Media Release - Nov. 17, 2021: The Carson Chamber Singers, a performing group of the Carson City Symphony Association, will begin rehearsals on Tuesday, November 23, 2021, for the Holiday Treat Concert. The rehearsal, directed by Ricky Hutton, will be 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the LDS Church, 411 N. Saliman Road in Carson City. Four rehearsals will follow, including two with orchestra.

The concert is Sunday, December 12, 2021, 4:00 p.m., at the Carson City Community Center. Choral numbers on the program are "Salvation is Created," "Wexford Carol," "Sing Noel," and "A Christmas Singalong."

The Not Quite Ready for Carnegie Hall Players (NQR) will perform holiday and other music on Thursday, Dec. 9, 2021, at noon at Carson Mall. You are encouraged to come by, listen to the ensemble, and support the shops in the mall during the holiday shopping season.

The "Not Quite Ready for Carnegie Hall Players" is the creation of Carson City Symphony Education Director and former Concertmaster Sue Jesch. Each week, a group of adult musicians, some of them beginners, get together to play music at the Carson City Senior Center. The group meets Thursdays at 11:15 a.m. The group is lead by Assistant Concert Master Laura Gibson.

The primary purpose of this is to give adult musicians who may not be ready for a regular adult orchestra, such as the Carson City Symphony, an opportunity to play and enjoy easy music. Several of the players have progressed enough to join the Carson City Symphony. The group has performed at assisted living events and many of the members participate in the annual Christmas Carol Play-along for Strings each December in Carson Mall. This year the Carol Play-along is on Dec. 17. NQR will also be performing at the Carson City Senior Center on Thursday, Dec. 16, at 11:00 a.m.

Symphony Youth Strings and Joyful Noise Carson Children's Choir, after-school educational programs of the Carson City Symphony Association, present "LatinXpressions III" on Thursday, December 9, 2021, at 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St., Carson City. Admission is free. Masks are required for audience and performers

String players from Carson City and surrounding areas, including public-, private-, and home-schooled students, grades 3 to 12, will perform music in Mexican, Brazilian, and Argentinian styles. Singers ages 4 to 12 will join them in two songs and sing three that feature percussion instruments, rhythm sticks, castanets, and claves.

The concert was programmed by Carson City Symphony Association's Education Director Sue Jesch and is conducted by Associate Concertmaster/Youth String Instructor Laura Gibson. It features about 50 students playing string instruments, including beginning violinists in their first performance and three ensembles: Allegro, level one; Vivace, intermediate; and STRAZZ, advanced. Michelle Powers is Director of the Joyful Noise Children's Choir.

Annual Holiday Treat Concert to Return

It's a Holiday Treat for all - a feast of seasonal and holiday entertainment in many styles!

Mark your calendars. The 38th Annual Holiday Treat Concert will return this year on Sunday, Dec. 12, 2021, at 4:00 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street. The Carson City Symphony under the direction of David Bugli, will be joined by the Carson Chamber Singers, under the direction of Richard "Ricky" Hutton, the Victorian Dancers, under the direction of Tiffany Alm, and the Joyful Noise Carson Children's Choir, directed by Michelle Powers. Consort Canzona, an early music ensemble, will perform at 3:00 p.m. in the lobby.

Treat your whole family: tickets are $18 general admission; $15 for seniors, students, and Symphony Association members; and free age 18 and under. Tickets are available in advance online at CCSymphony.com; and at the door. Audience members will be required to wear masks inside the theater.

The combined symphony and chorus will open the concert with Leroy Anderson's familiar A Christmas Festival. The Carson Chamber Singers will perform the beautiful a cappella Salvation is Created by Pavel Chesnokov and will be joined by orchestra musicians in Elaine Hagenberg's arrangement of Wexford Carol and David Hamilton's setting of Sing Noel.

The Carson City Symphony, conducted by Music Director-Conductor David Bugli, will perform several works, including selections from The Nutcracker, Victor Herbert's March of the Toys, and Brian Balmages' Fantasia on We Three Kings.

The Victorian Dancers, choreographed and directed by Tiffany Alm, will whirl and swirl to the sound of Johann Strauss Jr.'s Roses de Noel waltzes and Leroy Anderson's Sleigh Ride.

The Not Quite Ready for Carnegie Hall Players (NQR) will perform holiday and other music on Monday, Dec. 20, 2021, at 11:30 a.m. at Ormsby Post Acute Rehab, 3050 N. Ormsby Blvd., Carson City. The event is NOT open to the public.

The "Not Quite Ready for Carnegie Hall Players" is the creation of Carson City Symphony Education Director and former Concertmaster Sue Jesch. Each week, a group of adult musicians, some of them beginners, get together to play music at the Carson City Senior Center. The group meets Thursdays at 11:15 a.m. The group is lead by Assistant Concert Master Laura Gibson.

The primary purpose of this is to give adult musicians who may not be ready for a regular adult orchestra, such as the Carson City Symphony, an opportunity to play and enjoy easy music. Several of the players have progressed enough to join the Carson City Symphony. The group has performed at assisted living events and many of the members participate in the annual Christmas Carol Play-along for Strings each December in Carson Mall. This year the Carol Play-along is on Dec. 17.

Priscilla Hawkins Cello Lecture - Sept. 21, 2021

The Carson City Symphony Association held a Lecture-Demonstration-Workshop on Tuesday, September 21, 2021, at Carson High School in Carson City, Nevada. The event featured Priscilla Hawkins, who has performed as cello soloist and chamber musician; taught strings and presented cello workshops in Michigan, and California; been guest Master Teacher in the Azores Islands; and recorded two CDs.

In Part 1, Ms. Hawkins discussed "The History and Development of the Cello," including a rare, brief video of brilliant cellist Emanuel Feuermann playing "Spinning Song" by David Popper in the 1930s. In Part 2, she then led a workshop on "The Mechanics of Producing Your Best Cello Tone."

Youth and adult cellists were invited to participate. Student musicians and the public were invited to attend as observers. The event was was funded in part by a grant from Nevada Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Symphony Youth Strings Plan Two Concerts This Season

The Symphony Youth Strings program has confirmed two concert dates at the Carson City Community Center, according to Education Director Sue Jesch. The first is a LatinXpressions concert on Thursday, December 9, 2021. The second is called "Musical Oddities and Practical Jokes," and is scheduled for Thursday, April 21, 2022. Both concerts are at 6:30 p.m. and are open to the public.

Carson City Symphony to Begin Rehearsals January 12, 2022
for "Lovers & Heroes" Concert

Media Release - January 6, 2022: Attention musicians! The Carson City Symphony will begin rehearsals for its first concert of 2022 on Wednesday, January 12, 2022, 7:00 to 9:15 p.m., at the Carson High School band room, 1111 N. Saliman Road in Carson City.

Current openings are for strings, French horn, and bassoon. Musicians who are interested in joining should contact the Symphony at 775-883-4154 or email carsoncitysymphony@gmail.com. Musicians must be fully vaccinated and wear masks in the school. Wind and brass players may remove masks when playing.

The Symphony, conducted by David Bugli, is a volunteer orchestra of about 55 players who perform music from the 15th to 21st centuries. It is open to string players at any time without audition, and to other instrumentalists when positions are available.

The concert, "Lovers and Heroes," with guest cellist Stephen Framil, will be on Sunday, February 27, 2022, at 4:00 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, with a preview beginning at 3:15 p.m. The program includes music by Michael Kibbe, ƒdouard Lalo, LŽo Delibes, and Bruce Roter. Rehearsals for Spring Concerts

Media Release - Jan. 16, 2022: The Carson Chamber Singers, a performing group of the Carson City Symphony Association, will begin rehearsals on Tuesday, January 25, 2022, for spring concerts in May. The rehearsals, directed by Ricky Hutton, will be 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the LDS Church, 411 N. Saliman Road in Carson City. Weekly rehearsals will include two with instrumental ensemble.

The concerts will be Saturday, May 14 in Carson City, and Sunday, May 15, in Reno. The program includes "Frostiana" and "The Last Words of David" by Randall Thompson, and "Requiem" by John Rutter.

Joyful Noise Carson Children's Choir
To Begin Spring Session on Tuesday, January 25, 2022

Media Release - January 20, 2022: Carson City Symphony Association announces the Joyful Noise Carson Children's Choir will begin the Spring Session on Tuesday, January 25, 2022, from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m., upstairs at the First United Methodist Church, 412 W. Musser Street in Carson City.

Joyful Noise Carson Children's Choir led by Michelle Powers, welcomes children ages 4 to 12. Everyone will wear masks and observe social distancing.

Powers said, "Each rehearsal will develop students' musical skills, strong singing voices, and joy in music. I am excited to begin a new season of singing and playing, creating music, and making new friends!"

Tuition for the semester is free. Parents are encouraged to join the Carson City Symphony Association to help offset the cost of music, supplies, insurance, instructor's stipend, and more. Membership information is on the website CCSymphony.com/membership.htm.

Joyful Noise Carson Children's Choir, an educational program of the Carson City Symphony Association, was founded by Nancy Jones in 2017 and has been directed by Michelle Powers since fall of 2019. Three Carson City Students Awarded
Rosemary Nebesky Memorial Scholarships

Media Release: Feb. 25, 2022: Mia Hamilton, Luna Arredondo, and Izabell McCullen were awarded the sixth annual Rosemary Nebesky Memorial Scholarships by the Carson City Symphony Association this year. The scholarship was established by John and Jennifer Webley of Santa Rosa, Calif., in memory of Rosemary Nebesky, who loved music, loved children, and had been a friend and board member of the Carson City Symphony Association. It is awarded each year to one or more Carson City students age 5 to 17 for instrumental music lessons. The winners this year were selected from several well qualified applicants.

Mia Hamilton, age 14, is a 9th grader at Douglas High School. She has played violin for six years and plays in Carson City Symphony's advanced after-school youth strings ensemble, STRAZZ. Her goal is to be better than ever on the violin. She is using her scholarship for private lessons with Sue Jesch.

Luna Arredondo, age 12, a 7th grader at Eagle Valley Middle School, is a beginning cellist who plays in her school orchestra. She said playing cello makes her happy and she wants to learn to play well. She is using her scholarship for private cello lessons with Priscilla Hawkins.

Izabell McCullen, age 14, is a 9th grader at Carson High School and plays violin in the Concert Orchestra. She has been a member of the Carson City School District orchestra program since beginning middle school and has participated in Solo and Ensemble Festival and in Northern Zone Honor Orchestra. Her love of music has led her to play several instruments with her dad in "fun band nights in our garage." She will use her scholarship for private violin lessons with Laura Gibson.

Symphony Performs "Lovers and Heroes" Concert

The Carson City Symphony, directed by David Bugli, presents its "Lovers & Heroes" concert at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater, 851 E. William Street in Carson City on Sunday, February 27, 2022, at 4:00 p.m. The concert features guest soloist Stephen Framil performing ƒdouard Lalo's dramatic, romantic Cello Concerto in D minor.

The orchestra also will play Sylvia Suite by LŽo Delibes, the premiere of Michael Kibbe's Fanfare Overture (Carson City Overture), written as a gift to the Symphony, and Bruce Roter's With Courage and Compassion. Music Director David Bugli said, "Roter's work, premiered by the Symphony in 2003, is dedicated to first responders in memory of the September 11 attacks. We will perform it this time to recognize not only the fire fighters and police of 2001, but also the doctors, nurses, EMTs, and other first responders of the COVID-19 pandemic who put their lives in danger to help others."

Artist-in-Residence Workshop-Masterclass with Cellist Stephen Framil

The Carson City Symphony Association will hold an Artist-in-Residence Workshop-Masterclass on Thursday, February 24, 2022, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the Adams Hub, 111 W. Proctor Street in Carson City. The workshop features Stephen Framil, internationally renowned cello soloist, Music Director and Conductor of Camerata Philadelphia, Artistic Director of the Port City Music Festival in North Carolina, and Symphony Orchestra Music Director & Conductor at Eastern University. Dr. Framil will be in Carson City to perform as guest soloist with the Carson City Symphony on February 27. The Artist-in-Residence event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Framil will work with cello students from Carson City SymphonyÕs "Symphony Youth Strings" program; Carson Middle School, Eagle Valley Middle School, and Carson High School orchestras; and adult cellists in the community. He will lead a group class for cellists of all levels of experience and a one-one-one masterclass. Carson City Symphony's Youth Strings and Not Quite Ready for Carnegie Hall Players (NQR), an ensemble for adult intermediate string musicians, present a "Musical Oddities and Practical Jokes" concert on Thursday, April 21, 2022, at 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St. Carson City. Admission is free.

Symphony Youth Strings, an after-school, tuition-free educational program of the Carson City Symphony Association, includes students grades 2 to 12 from Carson City and surrounding areas, including public-, private-, and home-schooled students.

The concert was programmed by Carson City Symphony's Education Director Sue Jesch and is conducted by Associate Concertmaster and String Instructor Laura Gibson. It features 30 students - beginning violinists, grades two to five, in their second performance, and three string ensembles: Allegro, level one; Vivace, intermediate; and STRAZZ, advanced. They will be joined by 11 adult NQR players.

Symphony Youth Strings was founded by the Carson City Symphony Association in 2005. Bogl‡rka Kiss, a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician, recording artist, and college dean, resides in southern California. Kantu Inka presents Peruvian Music Workshop

The Carson City Symphony Assoc. is proud to present a free Peruvian Music Workshop and Concert by Kantu Inka on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at 2:30 p.m. The event is sponsored in part by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council. Students of all ages will learn to play zampo–as (panpipes) prior to the concert, and play them at the concert, accompanied by string players from the Symphony Youth Strings program and the Not Quite Ready for Carnegie Hall Players (NQR) program.

Since 2003, Kantu Inka has been teaching Peruvian culture, history and geography with Andean instruments to over 30,000 students of all ages in Nevada and California. Carlos Ocampo and Julie Lozada Ocampo unite their musical and teaching experience performing as Kantu Inka (formerly Dœo Kantu). A professional Andean musician and composer, Carlos is proficient on zampo–a, quena, bombo, charango, and guitar. Julie is a national board certified Spanish teacher who plays zampo–a and percussion for Kantu Inka. Julie and Carlos have designed presentations in English or Spanish that meet numerous national world language and social studies academic content standards. Carson Chamber Singers Present "Be Staid,"

Carson Chamber Singers, a 50-member chorus directed by Richard Hutton, presents "Be Staid...a choral reflection for our time" on Saturday, May 14, at 7:00 p.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Cathedral (310 W. 2nd Street, Reno) and on Sunday, May 15, at 4:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church (200 N. Division Street, Carson City).

The concerts feature Randall Thompson's "Frostiana" and John Rutter's "Requiem," accompanied by an instrumental ensemble. Two smaller works by these composers are also programmed: Thompson's "The Last Words of David" and Rutter's "A Ukrainian Prayer." Hutton said, "I chose two composers whose work is among the most performed of 20th century choral literature, eager to revisit these cherished pieces, which many of our choristers know well and love."

General admission tickets are $15; discounted tickets for seniors (age 62 plus), students, and members of the Carson City Symphony Association are $12. Youth ages 18 and under are admitted free. Tickets are available online at CCSymphony.com, on Facebook.com/CarsonCitySymphony, and at the door.

Founded in 1985 as a performing group of the Carson City Symphony Association, the Carson Chamber Singers have sung at several venues in northern Nevada and in California as far west as Sacramento. They sang for the 99th National American Legion Convention in Reno in 2017, have sung with the Reno Philharmonic, and perform regularly with the Carson City Symphony, most recently in December at the Holiday Treat concert.

The Carson City Symphony Association will present a free concert featuring Music of the Andes on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at 2:30 p.m., at Empire Elementary School, 1260 Monte Rosa Drive in Carson City. The concert features Kantu Inka - Carlos and Julie Lozado Ocampo - who have been presenting Peruvian Andean music in the U.S. since 2003.

Kantu Inka's performance will include an introduction to Andean wind, string, and percussion instruments, music, dance, geography, and clothing. They will be joined by about a dozen students of all ages playing zampo–as (Peruvian panpipes) and string instruments for a special rendition of "El Condor Pasa," a well-known piece written in 1913 by Peruvian composer Daniel Alom’a Robles. String parts were arranged for this project by Carson City Symphony musician, Bill Melendres.

This performance is the culmination of four workshops at which Kantu Inka shared their passion for Andean music with members of Carson City Symphony's Youth Strings and Not Quite Ready for Carnegie Hall adult string ensemble. Each participant learned to play and care for a 17-pipe bamboo zampo–a, hand-made in Peru.

Joyful Noise Carson Children's Choir and the Hosanna Handbell Choir will perform on Sunday, May 22, 2022, at 3:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 200 N. Division Street in Carson City. Admission is free.

Michelle Powers, director of both groups, said, "Please join us as we give a nod to spring and perform some of our favorites from this past season."

Joyful Noise Carson Children's Choir, a tuition-free educational program of the Carson City Symphony Association, is open to children ages 4 to 12 and performs several times a year. They also will be singing on Saturday, May 21, at 10:30 a.m. at Skyline Estates Senior Living in Carson City, and at 3:30 p.m. at Carson Valley Senior Living in Gardnerville.

Hosanna Handbell Choir rehearses Thursday evenings and participates in services at First United Methodist Church on the third Sunday each month.

Carson Chamber Singers to Begin
Rehearsals for June and July Concerts

Media Release - May 19, 2022: The Carson Chamber Singers, a performing group of the Carson City Symphony Association, will begin rehearsals on Tuesday, May 24, 2022, for two free outdoor concerts with the Symphony on June 12 and July 4, 2022. The rehearsals, directed by Ricky Hutton, will be on Tuesdays, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., at the LDS Church, 411 N. Saliman Road in Carson City, and additional rehearsals with the orchestra at the Carson City Senior Center. Singers may join for one or both concerts.

The first concert is the annual Pops Party on Sunday, June 12, 6:00 p.m., at the Capital Amphitheater between the Capitol and Legislature buildings in Carson City. The second will be part of the Genoa Americana Celebration on July 4 at 4:30 p.m. at Mormon Station State Park in Genoa.

The Silver Strings present "Music on the Porch" at Bowers Mansion Park at Fri., May 27, 2022, at 7:00 p.m. The event is free.

The performance is part of the "Programs on the Porch" series at Bowers Mansion Regional Park, 4005 Old Highway 395, Washoe Valley. These events are presented Fridays, May 20 to June 17, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Bring a blanket or chair and enjoy these live, local musicians as they entertain the public with a variety of genres. Other performers on the 2022 series are Jazz Dixie Review (May 20), Sierra Sweethearts (June 3), Sierra Highlanders Pipe Band (June 10), and Sierra Alphorn Players (June 17). This is a free series; however, donations are accepted for the performers. Programs will be subject to COVID restrictions in place at the time. Pops Party Concert at the Capital Amphitheater

The Carson City Symphony's 2022 annual Pops Party concert will be held on Sunday, June 12, 2022, at 6:00 p.m. at the Capital Amphitheater, in the park between the Capitol and Legislature buildings. Admission is free.

The Carson City Symphony, led by David Bugli, will be joined on the program by the Carson Chamber Singers, led by director Ricky Hutton, singer-songwriter Kevin Milburn, and a zampo–a (Peruvian pan flute) ensemble with Kantu Inka.

The program includes show tunes, Sousa marches, pops music, and Kevin Milburn's original songs, arranged for orchestra by David Bugli. The Carson Chamber Singers will sing Dos Oruguitas from Disney's "Encanto" by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Down by the Riverside arranged by John Rutter, and Homeland by Gustav Holst.

Seating is on the lawn. The audience is invited to bring blankets or lawn chairs. Ample free parking is in the garage on the corner of Fifth and Stewart Streets or on the street. Raffle tickets will be available and a food truck will be on Carson Street adjacent to the park. In case of rain, the concert will be indoors in the Maizie theater at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 W. King Street.

Carson City Symphony & Chorus Perform for
Genoa Americana Celebration

The Carson City Symphony, under the direction of David Bugli, the Carson Chamber Singers, under the direction of Ricky Hutton, and the Joyful Noise Carson Children's Choir, under the direction of Michelle Powers, will be performing at the Genoa Americana Celebration event at Mormon Station State Park, Genoa, starting at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, July 4, 2022. The orchestra will be joined by a guest vocalist Kevin Milburn. The concert is free and open to the public.

The program includes show tunes, Sousa marches, pops music, and Kevin Milburn's original songs, arranged for orchestra by David Bugli. The Carson Chamber Singers will sing Dos Oruguitas from Disney's "Encanto" by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Down by the Riverside arranged by John Rutter, and Homeland by Gustav Holst. The Joyful Noise will perform "Music is Always There" with the Symphony. There will also be patriotic music, including "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "Armed Forces Salute."

The Genoa Americana Celebration will start earlier in the day with a children's parade at 10:00 a.m. and the presentation of four smaller ensembles, starting at 11:00 a.m. The event is put on by Friends of Genoa in cooperation with the Town of Genoa. Bring low backed chairs or blankets. Please, no set up before 8:00 a.m. Chicken dinners will be available for purchase from the Genoa Volunteer Fire Department (GVFD), or visitors can stop by a Genoa food establishment or bring a picnic. Bring a towel or change of clothes for the children for the water games. No glass containers, please.

The Carson City Symphony Association will hold its Annual Meeting on Sunday, July 10, 2022, at 6:30 p.m. in person at a private home at 2662 Danielle Dr., Carson City, NV. The meeting will include election of officers for the new fiscal year 2022-2023.
