Three Carson City Students Awarded
Rosemary Nebesky Memorial Scholarships
Media Release - Dec. 22, 2019: Diana Bañuelos, Nathan Parsons, and Viviana Castro
were awarded the fourth annual Rosemary Nebesky Memorial Scholarships by the Carson City
Symphony Association this month. The scholarship was established by John and Jennifer Webley
of Santa Rosa, Calif., in memory Rosemary Nebesky, who loved music, loved children, and had been
a friend and board member of the Carson City Symphony Association. It is awarded each year to
one or more Carson City students age 5 to 17 for instrumental music lessons. The winners this
year were selected from several well qualified applicants.
Diana Bañuelos is a 14-year-old student in 8th grade at Dayton Intermediate School, which
does not have a string program in the schools. Diana studies violin in Carson City with Laura
Gibson and plays in the Carson City SymphonyÕs after-school Youth Strings program, where she
has advanced to the intermediate ensemble. Her teacher says that Diana "has progressed very
quickly on the violin because of her hard work and excellent attitude." She will use the scholarship
to continue her private violin lessons.
Nathan Parsons, age 13, is an 8th grader at Carson Middle School, where he plays violin,
trumpet, and saxophone. He plays in STRAZZ, Carson City SymphonyÕs advanced youth strings
ensemble, and in his school Advanced Orchestra, Advanced Band, Jazz Band, and Marching band,
and outside of Carson City in the Reno Philharmonic Youth Orchestra program, the All-State Band,
and more. His goal is to be a music major and ultimately a band director, and he is demonstrating
his leadership skills by mentoring other students and assisting his teachers.
Viviana Castro, age 13, is an 8th grader at Carson Middle School, where she plays in the
beginning orchestra. Although she has sung in choir for 5 years, it was only last year that
she decided to play violin. She said "I'm an eighth grader, just starting out on an instrument,
and I don't regret the decision at all." Viviana practices in all her free time, and will use the
scholarship for private lessons. She said ŅIÕm running to catch up, and I hope this will only increase my pace."
The next round of scholarships will be awarded in fall of 2020. For more information about
the scholarship and the application process, contact the Symphony at 775-883-4154.

Article from the February 26, 2020, Nevada Appeal:
'Salute to Young Musicians' is Sunday
The Capital City Community Band will present its annual "Salute To Young Musicians" concert
at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Boldrick Theater at the Carson Community Center.
The concert will feature the choirs from Bordewich-Bray and Fritsch Elementary Schools.
The concert is free and open to all members of our community and surrounding areas.
"Without young people involved in music, our community groups would cease to exist. This
is our way of honoring those students who enjoy making music and to show them music can always
be a part of their life no matter what career path they choose," said Nick Jacques, conductor
of the band. "March is 'Music In Our Schools' month, which celebrates the important role of
music education. Music must always be a part of every student's life."
The combined choirs are under the direction of Alan Catron and Nicole Witkowski and consist
mainly of fourth and fifth-grade students. Each choir meets before classes begin at each
individual elementary school and perform many concerts in our community.
The choirs will perform "What A Wonderful World" with the band. They will also perform some
songs on their own. Also joining the band is the Joyful Noise Children's Choir, under the
direction of Michelle Powers. The choir was founded in 2017 by Nancy Jones, and children between
the ages of 4-12 are invited to participate. Also featured in this Salute To Young Musicians
concert are the Carson Middle School clarinet Choir and Percussion Ensemble and the string ensemble "STRAZZ."
The band will perform a variety of music including "Star Wars - The Marches" and "Pie In
The Face Polka" which features the clarinet section.
Come and join the band in celebrating 42 years of sharing music with our community and
enjoy the music of the next generation of Carson City musicians. The concert is free.
