Consort Canzona, a select group of instrumentalists and singers that specializes in early music, will present two "Lessons and Carols" concerts this Christmas Season. The performances will be on Saturday, December 5, 2015, at 5:00 p.m. (not 6:00 p.m., as earlier reported on this website) at the Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church, 3680 US-395, Carson City, and Sunday, December 6, 2015, at 4:00 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 200 Island Ave., in Reno. Admission to both concerts is free, donations welcome.

"Lessons and Carols," originally titled "The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols," was first presented in 1880 by Edward Benson, later Archbishop of Canterbury, for a Christmas Eve service in Truro, Cornwall, where he was then Bishop. The Festival was created as Christian worship service recounting the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus. Selections from the Bible and religious writers of the Medieval and Renaissance eras, depicting the nine lessons, were interspersed with musical selections or hymns by the congregation.

Consort Canzona's "Lessons and Carols" presents readings from the Bible and from poets, such as John Milton and John Donne, alternating with vocal and instrumental compositions. Music by William Byrd, Tomas Victoria, and Michael Praetorius is included, and Heinrich Schutz' Deutsches Magnificat follows the reading on the Annunciation.

Carson City musician Sharon Kientz formed Consort Canzona in 2009 for recorders, cello, and harpsichord. Singers were added in 2011. The group is directed by Gary Schwartz.

Consort Canzona, a performing group of the Carson City Symphony Association, is supported in part by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, and by Association memberships and donations. Consort Canzona Presents Pair of Concerts
Saturday, May 21, and Sunday, May 22, 2016

Consort Canzona singers at Dec. 2015 concert

Consort Canzona, a select group of local instrumental musicians and singers, will be heard in two concerts commemorating the life of the group's founder, Sharon Kientz, who died in 2015. The concerts will be on Saturday, May 21, at 7:00 p.m., and Sunday, May 22, 2016, at 7:00 p.m., at Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church, 3680 Highway 395 South, Carson City, behind Best Buy. Admission is free.

Sharon Kientz was a local musician and early music expert. She founded Consort Canzona several years ago as an ensemble of recorders, cello continuo, and harpsichord. She invited singers to join the group in 2009. This expanded ensemble will perform the May concerts.

The cornerstone of the concerts is the Requiem Mass in F Minor by Bohemian composer Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (1644-1704). Instrumental compositions by John Dowland, Michael Praetorius, Hans Leo Hassler, and others will begin and conclude the concert and alternate with sections of the Mass.

Composer Heinrich Biber, better known for his skill a violinist, wrote the Requiem around 1692. It is considered one of the most striking examples of the Requiem Mass of the 17th Century. Scored for instruments and a five-part chorus, it includes the standard sections of a Requiem Mass: Introitus, Kyrie eleison and Dies Irae, Offeratorium, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei.

Consort Canzona affiliated with the Carson City Symphony Association in early 2014 and is directed by Gary Schwartz. It is supported in part by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, and by Association memberships and donations. For more information about the concert call the Symphony at 775-883-4154 or see the website CCSymphony.com.
