NEW CHORAL GROUP TO BEGIN IN CARSON CITY

The Carson City Symphony Association announces the beginning of a new singing group this fall, the Carson City Symphony Chorus, an extension of the Carson Chamber Singers, now in its twenty-eighth season. The new Chorus, directed by Michael Langham, will be open to all singers, high-school age through adults. They will perform in two or more concerts with the Carson City Symphony each year, the Holiday Treat in December and the Pops Party in June.

Rehearsals for the December 9 Holiday Treat Concert will begin on Tuesday evening, October 30, 2012, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., at the Symphony Association's studio at the Carson Mall, 1219 S. Carson Street, next to Play Your Own Music. At least six rehearsals will precede each concert.

Langham, who also directs the Carson Chamber Singers and is Director of Music and Principal Organist at Trinity Episcopal Church in Reno, said, "This is a new choral adventure for people who want to sing great choral works accompanied by orchestra. I envision the group growing to a hundred or more singers to balance the sound of the orchestra. The Carson City Symphony Chorus will provide an additional opportunity for amateur and volunteer professional vocalists, and high school and church choir members from throughout the area."

Zephyrus Brass Quintet Performs at Carson Mall

The Zephyrus Brass Quintet, an affiliate of the Carson City Symphony, will play for the "Blood Drive for Life" event at Carson Mall on Saturday, January 26, 2013. The Quintet will play from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., but the event, as a whole, is from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and is sponsored by Northern Nevada Youth Football League and United Blood Services. This marks the second appearance by Zephyrus at the Carson Mall. The members of the group are Bob Masters and Alan Catron, trumpets; Lin Nelson, horn; Paul Jorgensen, trombone; and David Bugli, tuba.

Zephyrus (also Zephyr) is the Greek name for the god of the west wind. In Latin he is known as Favonius (meaning "favorable," as in favorable for the growing of crops). He was regarded as the messenger of spring, because he brought the gentle spring rains and he was the gentlest of the four winds. The only wind that Odysseus would allow to guide him to Ithaca was Zephyrus, and Zephyrus guided Aphrodite to the sea of Paphos when she was born. Zephyrus was also the father of Achilles' horses Xanthus and Balius. Here in northern Nevada, where he have wild horses, the strong wind we often experience is sometimes referred to as the Washoe Zephyr. We think it only appropriate that a group of western wind players adopt the name of this Greek god.

Join Us in an ACMP Play-in
Saturday, March 2, 2013

Photograph of Bach Branderburg Concerto No. 5

Would you like to be part of a worldwide chamber music Play-in by joining a group in Carson City on March 2? The Chamber Music Network (ACMP, formerly American Chamber Music Players) is planning a Worldwide Play-in event on the weekend of March 2 and 3. Our ACMP Play-in event will be Sat., March 2, 2013, 4:00 p.m., at 1219 S. Carson St. in the Carson Mall. According to the ACMP website, "We hope that throughout the weekend of March 2-3, 2013, somewhere on the planet, ACMP members will be playing chamber music together! You are encouraged to organize a chamber music playing event in your own local area during that weekend."

Is this just for string players? No, anyone who can read or transpose strings parts can join. We are still working on selecting music, but, depending on who responds, we may do a Brandenburg concerto with flute part(s). We are not strict about how many play on a part - it's for fun! We intend to provide links to public domain music that participants can download, once we have selected the music. Also, the playing will be followed by a potluck.

If you are interested in participating, contact Ellie Bugli at 775-883-4154. Reservations are required.

The Chamber Singers will perform Requiem by composer John Rutter, a 20th century work of profound emotion for chorus with soprano solo, accompanied by a chamber ensemble of organ, flute, cello, harp, glockenspiel, and timpani. Its seven movements are based on texts from the Missa pro defunctis, the Book of Common Prayer, and the Psalms. Also included in the concert will be other works by John Rutter and two spirituals.

Soloists for this concert will include sopranos Lisa Buder, Annie Davidson, Martha Miners, and Julie Linstrom, and mezzo-soprano Jenice Provost.

In describing the concert program to the members of the chorus, Music Director Michael Langham said, "As I began to plan and prepare the concert program, I was moved by the great tragedy the people of Newtown, Connecticut, experienced in mid-December. Many miles away, here in northern Nevada, I wanted the Carson Chamber Singers to sing our thoughts and feelings about this great loss and share, with our fellow Americans, in expressing our concern for our neighbors, near and far."

Critically acclaimed artist and musician Stephen Framil has appeared as concert soloist, chamber musician, and conductor the world over and was guest soloist with Carson City Symphony in 2004 and 2006. When he played Dvorak's Cello Concerto in the Philipines, the reviewer said "There are no words to describe the dazzling technique and bravura of American cellist Stephen Framil. His tone, warm and glowing, is positively brilliant. Suffice it to say, he is the very best cellist I have ever heard perform - and I have heard many." Read more about Stephen Framil and listen to live recordings on www.stephenframil.com.

While in Carson City, Dr. Framil also will lead a masterclass for student cellists on April 25 and play a house recital on April 26. For information about these events and the "A Celebration in Two Sharps" concert, call the Symphony at 775-883-4154 or see CCSymphony.com.

Remembering Dorothea Jones
Former Board Member and Carson Chamber Singers Member
Aug. 7, 1928, to Jun. 26, 2013

Photograph of xxx

We are sad to report the death of Dorothea Jones, former Carson City Symphony Association Board member and former member of the Carson Chamber Singers. Dorothea served for many years as the Treasurer of the Association, keeping detailed and meticulous records. She joined the Chamber Singers in 1986 and sang soprano with them until 2009. Dorothea was always upbeat and, with her late husband Ken, volunteered with several duties for the Association.

Services will be held on Saturday, July 6th at 10 a.m. at Horizon Christian Church, 1995 E. Prater Way, Sparks, NV, officiated by Dr. Tom Anderson. Following the service will be a reception at BJ's Restaurant, 425 Sparks Blvd. A private burial service will follow at Walton's Carson Gardens in Carson City, NV.

Music meant a lot to Dorothea, but family was another part of her big heart. We extend our sympathy to Dorothea's family and thank them for letting her be part of our "family."
