The Great Locomotive Chase: One of the pieces on the program is Robert W. Smith's "The Great
Locomotive Chase." During the Civil War, in April 1862 several Union spies
led by James J. Andrews stole a locomotive, the General,
in Marietta, Ga., and attempted to use it to destroy railroad bridges between there and
Chatanooga which were critical to Confederate forces. It was chased by
Confederate soldiers in another locomotive, the Texas. That's the story that Smith
tries to tell in his composition. Buster Keeton told the story in his own way hilarious
in "The General," a 1926 silent film (106 minutes). It is considered by several
film critics, including Roger Ebert, to be
among the top 10 films of all time. You can
see the whole 106-minute movie on YouTube by clicking
here.
Disney also produced a movie version of this story in 1956 starring Fess Parker as
James J. Andrews, the Northern spy.
The true story of the Great Locomotive Chase can be read at
http://ngeorgia.com/history/raiders.html.
The famous locomotive, the General, is now on exhibit at the Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History
(formerly the Kennesaw Civil War
Museum)

come north up Virginia Street, take a left at Court St., cross Sierra St., and
take a right (north) on Rainbow Street (which is right beside Trinity

should still be plenty of parking in the courthouse parking lot, on the
